We strive to accurately reproduce all photographs of shingles in literature and for onscreen viewing. The roofing product colors you see are as accurate as technology allows. We suggest that you view a roofing display or several shingles to get a better idea of the actual color. To accurately judge your shingle and color choice, we recommend that you view it on an actual roof with a pitch similar to your own roof prior to making your final color selection.

Owens Corning manufactures insulation, roofing, and fiberglass products. It started in 1935 as a partnership between two American glass companies — Corning Glass Works and Owens-Illinois. And today, it has approximately 19,000 employees around the world. Owens Corning has been a Fortune 500 company every year since the list was created in 1955, and the Pink Panther appears in many of the company’s advertisements. Many types of roofing materials and insulation products have been created over the years, but Owens Corning is a pioneer in some of the most efficient products on the market today. The company is known for its use of pink-colored products, which is why it has adopted the Pink Panther as its mascot.
How Owens Corning Got Started
A Corning Glass researcher named Dale Kleist accidentally discovered fiberglass in 1932. He was trying to combine blocks of glass to form transparent, weatherproof walls. But while he was trying to use glass as a sealant, a stream of compressed air mixed with the molten glass to form a mesh of strong fibers. Not long after this discovery was made, Corning Glass merged with Owens-Illinois to form a new company so it could turn it into a commercial product. And by 1938, Owens Corning made over $2 million in sales. In 1939, the United States Navy’s Bureau of Ships made their insulation products standard for the construction of new warships. It also helped in the creation of Navy Board, which was a permanent form-board insulation material that was covered with a woven fiber cloth. And in 1944, Owens Corning manufactured a prototype boat hull that was made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic.
In 1955, Owens Corning introduced its Perma-Ply roofing product to the market (which was used for insulating a built-up roofing system). And in 1956, it created its first all-fiberglass wool. The company dyed it pink, so it could be distinguished from other products on the market. But it was concerned that it would discourage its predominately male buyers from purchasing the product. They eventually decided to discontinue this version of the product, which led to a number of people requesting that the pink color be restored. So, they brought back the pink coloring, which they did to license the Pink Panther cartoon character. And in 1979, they adopted it as the company’s official mascot.
